And the Verdict Is.... (Blog # 6)

While listening to the podcast for this week’s blog post I was expecting to hear about all of the great things that the Internet has accomplished and how the risks of the Internet pale in comparison to the advantages. I was pretty disappointed to find out that the podcast did not provide much t compete with Carr’s article against the use of the Internet.
The main point of the podcast for me was that the Internet has changed the way that we can find information and that information is more or less permanent now.  Now although I do agree with this, and I do think the Internet is a grand well of information, this does not argue against Carr’s argument. Although the point was made that there will always be people who will argue against change in the way people gather information.  So I decided to look online for the advantages of the Internet. The top advantages of the Internet are:

Faster Communication
Information Resources
Entertainment
Social Networking
Online services
e-commerce.

All of the above are great tools the Internet allows people to use with ease. However, even with such a great tool I still agree with Carr, I believe that the excessive use of the internet is changing the way that human beings think and that it is making it more difficult for people to focus. I believe that people need to spend less time on the computer.

  1. I agree completely with all of the advantages for usage of the Internet. Also that people need to spend less time on the computer. Because people become so involved with technology that they lose sight of what is in front of them family, work, relationship, etc..

  2. I do agree with the advantages of the internet. I also people forget about the advantages when they are criticizing technology. The internet may be cutting into face to face communication but at the same time it is bring it back. It is also allowing people to communicate with people all over the world. Social networking allows us to communicate with people from all over and allows us to communicate with people we probably would not have been able to communicate with before twitter and facebook. Things like Skype, Oovoo, facetime and other forms of video chat are bringing the face to face communication back. I also do agree with the fact that people need to spend less time on the computer. People are in control of their own destiny and need to start taking responsibility for their actions and stop giving excuses. If people use the computer less they will not be affected negatively by it. People need to own up to the fact that its their fault they are affected negatively by the internet.

  3. I agree that people really don't focus on anything anymore. With the internet being a tool that we can use quickly and easily making everyone think that that's the way we should be thinking. Quick, easy, NOW. People don't really spend the time to sit down and really look for the answer or problem solve to fix a problem.

  4. I agree with how technology can consume us to the point where we can't focus. The positive thing about the internet is that it's a easy tool for finding resources and communicating BUT there's that loss of depth. Also, we rely on technology too much to the point where we expect a machine to find the answer for us than ourselves.

  5. I agree with how technology is consuming people and not allowing them to focus. The simplicity of the internet and access to information is very nice at times but it can be relied on too heavily and cause people to become lazy
