Soooo... Hows the weather today? (Blog #2)

"We must begin to say 'no' to certain kinds of technology and to begin to control technological change because we've now reached the point that technology is so powerful and so rapid that it could destroy us unless we control it."
The above statement is form the movie ‘Future Shock’ in response to technology changing at an ever-increasing rate. People have begun to fear the affects that this change will have on people, some of those affects have already become apparent.
The biggest problem with technology in today’s society is that it is making it harder for people to talk to one another in person. Today there are many outlets to socialize with people with the use of technology, but all of them have a certain wall that people can hid behind. For phones, you cannot see the person, nor are you talking face-to-face. For texting, be it on a phone or through Internet chat, you cannot even hear the person’s voice. With Skype and other forms of video chat, you can hear and see the person, but you are still not talking to them face to face. To me it makes socializing with people seem impersonal.
Another issue is that technology is evolving so fast that we are no longer able to fully realize the consequences or fully appreciate new tech. Even now the idea of something new coming up is no longer as exciting as it once was. I almost wish that technology would slow down a little so that I could get used to what I already have and not worry about the next big thing.
Technology may have to eventually stop evolving simply because people might get tired of all of it. People might start to reject tools such as the Iphone or the computer because people are starting to lose their ability to talk to people.

  1. I agree fully that we as a society don't have any time to appreciate new technology. It seems like just yesterday that I was enamored by the touch screens that were used on old computers by our lunch ladies in school. Now that I have something far more advanced in my hands, I am not filled with nearly as much awe as I feel that I should be. I mean, I was raised on dial up...and now I can look at 12 web pages in three seconds. Shouldn't I get time to appreciate this. No, because tomorrow it will just be old news. Great points!

  2. I definitely agree with the idea that technology may begin to stop evolving. Sometimes it seems like we're going backwards in time. We used to take snail mail for granted but get so excited when we got an email. Now, getting an email is so ordinary, but I know I get incredibly excited if I get a letter in the mail.

  3. I agree with the idea that technology will slow down in the evolution of it due to the lack of understanding what exactly they have in their hands. People in society are all about THE NEW thing. whether or not it is any better, its still NEW. I think thats what bugs me about the way people just buy the new things right away instead of waiting to learn what it can do and have the companies work out the kinks in the design.
